Sloth Rocket Grand Prix: a kart racer in one HTML file

The brief was a go-kart racer in a single HTML file, with five themes that have nothing to do with each other: Formula 1, rockets, pirates, libraries and sloths. I gave that to Claude on a Sunday morning and had a playable game before lunch.

Play Sloth Rocket Grand Prix

What's in it

  • Five courses. Pole Position Park, Launch Pad Loop, Cutthroat Cove, The Grand Stacks and Slowpoke Canopy.
  • Five karts. A formula car, an astronaut on a rocket, a pirate galleon, a librarian's book cart and a sloth on a log. Each one handles differently.
  • Up to four players on one screen, with computer rivals filling the rest of the grid.
  • Three levels (Rookie, Pro and Legend) and a five-race Grand Prix with points.
  • Items. Turbo, cannonball, book trap, heat shield and the sloth spell, which slows down everyone ahead of you.

How to play

Open the game in Chrome or Edge on a computer.

  • Xbox controller: press A to join. RT or A accelerates, LT or B brakes, RB drifts, and LB or X uses an item.
  • Keyboard: press W or the up arrow to join. Steer with WASD or the arrows, drift with Space or Shift, and use items with E or Enter.
  • Wheel and pedals: press any button on the wheel to join. A short calibration walks through steering, gas and brake.

Hold drift through a corner and let go for a boost.

Where it falls short

  • The graphics are simple blocks. There are no artist-made models.
  • A wheel gets no force feedback, because browsers don't offer it.
  • I haven't tried it on an Xbox console yet. It should run in the console's Edge browser, but that's a guess until I test it.

What I'd like to add

More courses, a time trial mode and River's ideas, once he has had a turn at it.
